Elakizhi, an Ayurvedic therapy, is beneficial for the body due to its unique approach to addressing pain, stiffness, and various musculoskeletal issues through the use of herbal poultices and massage.
A variety of fresh medicinal leaves and herbs are selected based on the individual’s specific needs. Commonly used herbs include Neem, Castor, and Nirgundi, among others. The herbs are finely chopped and mixed with other ingredients like grated coconut, rock salt, and lemon juice. This mixture is then heated and wrapped in a cloth to form small, round bundles known as kizhis.
Medicated oil is warmed to a comfortable temperature. The oil used in Elakizhi is usually herbal, with anti-inflammatory properties, and is chosen based on the patient’s health condition.
The treatment begins with a gentle application of warm oil on the body to prepare the skin and muscles. The heated herbal poultices are then dipped in warm oil and applied to the affected areas using rhythmic tapping, massaging, and pressing techniques. This process is repeated continuously to ensure the body receives consistent warmth and the healing benefits of the herbs.
After the treatment, the patient is allowed to relax for a while to let the therapeutic effects of Elakizhi settle in.
